Better Business for a Better World

On August 11 students were invited to join the AIESEC event based on entrepreneurship, Better Business for a Better World.

Thank you to all who attended, it was a great event with a perfect turnout and some fantastic ideas generated!

For the first part of the afternoon, we heard from:
-Mary Magafakis (State Manager, Young Achievement Australia) on entrepreneurship,
-Anne Evans (AMACC) on how to apply for grants, and
-Peter Vroom (Founder, Vroom & Associates) and
-Amanda Heyworth (CEO, Playford Capital, Former LCP) on their experiences.

Students then split into groups to brainstorm promotion ideas for the following not-for-profit organisations:
-Australian Refugee Association
-DownSyndrome SA
-Carclew Youth
-Trees for Life
The competition for the hypothetical $10,000 grant was fierce, with some creativity coming to the fore in the 5-minute pitches, but judges Peter and Amanda eventually decided on the Trees for Life team as the winner.

Thanks again to all involved, we look forward to making this an annual event!

MELCon thoughts

It seems surreal that only 2 weeks ago, I was living it up with AIESECers from around the nation in Melbourne, albeit in an already extremely tired and sick state. Being back in Adelaide has made me realise that MELCon has made a resounding impact not only on myself, but particularly those AU members experiencing a national conference for the very first time. As always, I was excited and proud to have been able to share conference with such a diverse group of Adelaidians =)

The MELCon experience was a draining one, particularly those who were there for all the pre-conference activities. I thought that YIS and DLD days were top notch - Peter Ivett from Vivente tailored an extremely worthwhile session for the NLT guys. Fighting over remnants of subway over these two days certainly enhanced the experience.

Conference was a challenging experience - it was clearly harder than I imagined it to be. I found myself in a constant bind of attempting to soak up as much information as possible in session flows, introducing myself and talking to as many new faces as I could inbetween meals and breaks, finding time to get to know the NLT better, catching up with the outgoing MC team, encouraging the incoming MC team, all whilst leading a delegation of 21 people. I wanted to enjoy the moment for what it was. I knew that the passion and vibe at conference needed to be comprehensively captured in order for activity to be driven the way it should be upon return to the LC.

MELCon was relatively well run in spite of the difficulties encountered with the site. The OC of Joyce, Jing, Tina, Kenny, *deep breath* JOHNNY LAY (and Sandy) should be applauded because they strove hard to make conference a rewarding experience for all delegates.

There were many highlights of MELCon and I'm sure that I will miss one as I try to recall them all here. Thanks to Murad for helping to squeeze 8 other interstaters + luggage into your one-bedroom, 33 feet apartment for a week. The 'bar hop' was superb (even if it was quite a drain on the pocket). Obviously the outgoing MC speeches were teary and overly inspiring - to say a final goodbye to what one has know for the last 4-6 years of one's life is a sobering thought. All the best for your future guys, whatever it is that you decide to pursue. Know that you have made a lasting impact on the imminent future of AIESEC Australia. The 80's night party was great - whoever thought that stopping the flow of drinks at 11pm would actually enhance the number of intoxicated people. Jerry Springer night was also an alarming and randy experience to say the least. Thanks to Raj for supplying us all with nightmares for the next decade. Skolling night was UQ pipping AU at the post to take home the Epi cup, cheap drinks, dancing and grinding, numerous win-ons and the home of the 6am club.

However, what made conference particularly special for me was the LC's recognition at Award's night. To take home the Excellence in outgoing exchange award is one thing, but to be recognised as the LC Committee of the year....words cannot articulate the feeling! All the hard work, the gestures of support from the family, the EB, the RB, the G6, the LC, Anne + Ruthie, the long nights and long EB meetings, the ridiculously early morning starts, the university struggle and general challenges with time management have been vindicated in one truly unbelievable moment. And I am just so proud.

SnA is now also over, and there is a realisation that there is an incredible amount of work and activity to do at AU. Only a few months to work towards achieving the results I know the LC is capable of. Only a few months before I have an impending successor. Only a few months before I begin the next chapter of my AIESEC experience. I am awaiting and ready to embrace the next challenges...

MELCon Part 1

Final update before MELCon!

AIESEC Adelaide University is proud to have the second largest delegation attending the national conference with 22 members attending. We also have majority of numbers in the Star Sellers Team (SST) sales and marketing workshop to be held on July 5. The 9 AU members who have been lucky enough to be selected for SST will be working hard for the next 6 months to raise internships across a broad range of sectors.

This conference has been highly-anticipated and with 238 AIESEC members attending from across the nation and an impressive list of sponsors and keynote speakers, it promises to be a huge event!

We're back

The AIESEC Adelaide University blog is back! Due to some changes in Blogger's account system there have been a few issues, but now everything is fixed and there should be more updates on their way.

So what's been happening in our LC? In short...

1) AU contributed to the national recruitment campaign ("350 high quality new members...what's your contribution?") with 36 new members selected and inducted. Katherine from On-Campus Communications would like to thank the whole LC for their efforts in recruitment, in particular the People Development team for their excellent work in running a smooth induction and selection.

2) Congratulations to Simon, who raised TNs with Clipsal and Michel's. A very warm welcome is extended to Pavel from the Czech Republic who is currently filling the traineeship position at Clipsal.

3) Congratulations to Sui, who ran a very successful Student Review Board (SRB) for the exchange candidates, as well as organising internships for Chris and Cate under very trying circumstances. Both will be starting in their positions in China in July.

4) Congratulations also to the following who received awards at the recent Rewards & Recognition ceremony; Chris, Michelle, Zac and Martin. The decisions for these awards were extremely difficult due the high potential, hard work and enthusiasm of all current members.

What's coming up?

1) MELCon! This year, AIESEC Australia's July conference will be held at St Mary's College in Melbourne. This promises to be a huge event, with sponsors the University of Melbourne, Monash University, ANZ, Standard & Poor's, Asialink, Australian Association of Graduate Employers Ltd in conjunction with national partners Shell, Electrolux, Singapore Airlines, GE, P&G and Vivente Australia. Pre-conference events will be from July 5-8, some of which will be open to the public, with the conference itself from July 9-14. Information and registration can be found here.

2) AIESEC AU will be looking for students who want to go on exchange over the summer break! If you would like to do a 3 month internship starting in December, it's time to start applying! Email sui.khoo@aiesec.net for details.

More news about Semester 2's activities will be coming soon...watch this space!
